Playoffs are Looming

By , December 14, 2010 8:36 pm

So the NFL playoffs are just around the corner and for some fans it’s getting stressful.

The Colts finally came out with a win last Thursday night, and the ‘W’ was long waited for. For a while there I was worried they would not even make the playoffs.

They can still win their division, but they have to win these next two games. It is a must and the players are probably well aware that it is crunch time.

The Colts are not too familiar with not making the playoffs, so they are in a rare spot having to worry about winning this late in the season. Fans, players, coaches, and owner Jim Irsay are all probably reminding the team when it means to be a Colt.

It means you have to win. It is expected and the players need to deliver-even if they are second string.

Sunday is a big day, especially for the Colts, who need a win to keep playoff dreams alive. Though the Superbowl is probably not in their reach seeing as how half of the offense is out with injuries; but they could put up a good fight for a couple of games into the playoffs.

High School Basketball

There was a time when high school basketball was no big deal, especially girls high school basketball. Now it is a competitive sport where stats are posted and players are a big deal.

This team sport is becoming more and more like the pros – in other words it’s a team sport that is more about the individual than the team. Players are singled out and the elite are put on pedestals and are deemed destined for greatness.

Though it is awesome that certain players have a great talent, let’s just remember that it is just high school. There is no need to compare them to the greats when they put up points, but shun them when they miss the game-winning shot.

This is not make or break – it’s high school – and it should be treated as such. They’re kids and when they shine they should be praised, but they should not be told that they are better than everyone else because that will only give them a big ego that is hard to get rid of.

Michael Vick Rallies Back

He went to college for only two years and then entered the draft at the young age of 21. He was drafted first overall by the Atlanta Falcons, making him the first African-American quarterback to be picked first overall.

He served as the Falcon’s quarterback for six seasons, but then everything tumbled down around him. Michael Vick spent 23 months in prison for illegal dog-fight activities.

It seemed like he threw out his entire career; and after fans got over their anger for what he did to those animals, they were saddened by the fact that he let go of a chance at a bright future. Well someone believed in him, because he was signed by a team.

Donovan McNabb, then-quarterback for the the Philadelphia Eagles, rallied for the team owner and coaching staff to take a chance on the fresh-out-of-prison player. They signed Vick, who only played in games that required special plays.

Several service projects and a season later, Vick is now the starting qb for the Eagles, while McNabb is playing for the Red Skins. Vick showed through his hard work and willingness to become a better person that second chances are possible and yes; we can climb back on top.

For his first game as starting quarterback, he led his team to victory , further solidifying the decision to take a chance on this risky player. Now Vick has a chance to achieve greatness; but this time he knows to behave because everything can – and will – be taken away if he screws up again.
