So the NFL playoffs are just around the corner and for some fans it’s getting stressful.
The Colts finally came out with a win last Thursday night, and the ‘W’ was long waited for. For a while there I was worried they would not even make the playoffs.
They can still win their division, but they have to win these next two games. It is a must and the players are probably well aware that it is crunch time.
The Colts are not too familiar with not making the playoffs, so they are in a rare spot having to worry about winning this late in the season. Fans, players, coaches, and owner Jim Irsay are all probably reminding the team when it means to be a Colt.
It means you have to win. It is expected and the players need to deliver-even if they are second string.
Sunday is a big day, especially for the Colts, who need a win to keep playoff dreams alive. Though the Superbowl is probably not in their reach seeing as how half of the offense is out with injuries; but they could put up a good fight for a couple of games into the playoffs.
Is anyone else disappointed with this year’s football season? Teams that have been great in past years are now at the bottom of the pack struggling to even make the playoffs.
The Colts, who have made the playoffs for a decade straight, are now only “in the hunt.” They have been plagued with injuries that have undoubtedly set back their game.
They always talk about the next player up needing to be just a prepared as the starters, but the truth is they aren’t and they couldn’t be.
Guys who are playing the field now haven’t even played in an NFL game before, and now they are being forced to play as a starter.
They don’t have the same rhythm and they can’t read the defense as well because they have never played them before.
Peyton Manning is a lone ranger, but football is a team sport. He can be great – the greatest – but if he doesn’t have teammates that help him out he can’t win.
Right now we see a great quarterback at the helm, but no help from his teammates. He can’t win games, and without his starters many are losing hope.
The Colts are missing almost all of their offensive weapons. Only Peyton Manning and Reggie Wayne are healthy, and as long as the defense only have to focus on those two players, the Colts are in a lot of trouble.
The Colts starting linebacker Tyjuan Hagler has been put on IR for the rest of the season due to a ruptured biceps. Five other players from the Colts team were missing from practice on Wednesday as well due to injuries: Marlin Jackson(strained ACL),Anthony Gonzalez (knee),Kelvin Hayden (knee),Bob Sanders (elbow),and Dwight Freeney who was held out to rest.
Physical injury is part of the game of football, it’s unfortunate when players get hurt but not unexpected. Now people are beginning to wonder how much damage there is to be had mentally. Recent studies from the NFL have shown that their is a higher case of dementia and other cognitive impairments in retired and under 50 NFL players than in the rest of the general population.
These studies have not been peer reviewed yet, which means the details cannot be confirmed as fact quite yet. Within the last month the NFL has formed a concussion and traumatic brain injury committee that will continue to look at long-term effects of brain injuries among players. The committee will also look at the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention brain injury in players who are still actively playing today.
Though evidence is still being gathered, many professionals over the past three years have testified to the link between sports head injuries and later cognitive problems. The NFL and its staff still believe their is not enough information to conclude anything as fact. Who knows where this will take the sport of football in years to come.
